The question comes up on almost every commerce project: build on Shopify, or build something custom? The wrong answer is expensive in both directions, so it is worth deciding deliberately.
Choose Shopify when
- You sell a fairly standard catalogue of physical or digital products.
- You want payments, shipping, taxes, and inventory handled for you.
- Speed to launch matters more than owning every layer of the stack.
- Your team would rather manage products than maintain servers.
Shopify is a mature platform. For the majority of merchants, that maturity is a feature, not a compromise.
Choose custom when
- Your product model does not fit a standard cart.
- You need workflows, pricing, or portals that no theme can express.
- You are building software to sell, not just a store to run.
- Integrating your own systems is the core of the business.
The hybrid most teams miss
You do not have to pick one. A very common pattern is a Shopify storefront paired with a custom app or service behind it. The store handles commerce. The custom layer handles the part that makes your business yours.
That is exactly the shape of our own product work: a storefront experience on Shopify, with custom logic where it matters.
A simple test
List the things that make your business different. If none of them touch checkout, pricing, or fulfilment, Shopify will serve you well. If several do, custom code is probably cheaper than the workarounds.
Still unsure? Our services page covers both paths, and you can talk to us about your specific catalogue and workflow.
